Call for Papers and Participation Registration
We are pleased to inform you that the 30th Annual Philippine Studies Forum in Japan (APSFJ) will be held at Komaba Campus, The University of Tokyo, on 21 and 22 June 2025. This conference is an ideal venue for academics, graduate students, researchers, and practitioners to share and discuss their research and ideas with fellow Filipinists, particularly those within Japan.
Field of Presentations:
– Academic presentations in various disciplines, including but not limited to: history, gender studies, anthropology, film-media studies, sociology, literature, art history, religious studies, musicology, political science and migration studies.
– Presentation on activities by NGOs, the private sector, and government agencies.
– Art performance, film showing, and exhibitions by artists.
– Journalistic presentations.
Schedule:
– Registration deadline: 12 May 2025 (Mon.)
– Conference:21(Sat.) and 22(Sun.) June 2025.
– Screening process and notification: The steering committee will notify the applicant the result of the screening within 10 days from the submission of the application.
*Due to the venue of the conference, the steering committee has decided to conduct an ongoing screening solely on the appriateness of the presentation. Recently, securing hotel accomodations in Shibuya has become difficult, and obtaining a visa to enter Japan seems to take a long time. Especially for the applicant from abroad, we strongly encourage you to immediately start working on your visa application, plane tickets, and hotel accommodations as soon as you receive our approval for your presentation.

Format:
-In-person only.
-Less than 30 minutes (probably 20 mins. of presentation and 10 mins of discussion) for an individual presentation including the open forum; 90 minutes for a panel presentation.
-The steering committee encourages the foreign presenters form a panel with 2 or 3 other people including the discussant and moderator.
Requirements for participation:
Anyone who is interested in, and/or whose research is related to the Philippines. (Those who reside outside Japan may apply to attend the conference, but please be informed that the steering committee does not provide any assistance for visa application or accommodation.)
Daycare: If there is a need for daycare, please inform the steering committee.
Participation Fee: 5000 yen (Paid at the on-site registration in cash and in yen)*
*The fee includes the reception party in the evening of Saturday, the 21st, and the lunch of Sunday, the 22nd. The fee remains the same regardless of whether you attend the reception party and lunch. There might be reimbursement of very small amount for travelling expenses for foreign participants and graduate students. If reimbursement is possible, it will be handed to the recipient in cash in the afternoon of the 22nd. The steering committee will determine the feasibility of reimbursement, the amount and the recipients.
