CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
SEASREP Dissertation Workshop
Kyoto University | 10–11 December 2026
SEASREP is pleased to invite applications for the SEASREP Dissertation Workshop, to be held at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University on 10 (Thursday) –11 (Friday) December 2026.
SEASREP is a regional network and foundation dedicated to advancing the study of Southeast Asia through training, exchanges, research collaboration, and related scholarly activities. Further information is available at www.seasrepfoundation.org.
About the Workshop
The workshop is designed for doctoral students in Southeast Asian Studies who are at an advanced stage of their research, preferably following the completion of their fieldwork. It offers participants sustained, close critical engagement with senior scholars in the field, and an opportunity to refine how they present their research questions, arguments, and scholarly contributions to an international audience.
The workshop will bring together:
- 7 SEASREP Board Members, serving as mentors and discussants: https://www.seasrepfoundation.org/about/board-of-trustees/
- 14 PhD students currently based in Japan, regardless of nationality
Each board member will mentor two participants individually. In addition to these mentoring sessions, the workshop will include group lectures and discussions focused on the framing, argumentation, and broader significance of participants’ work.
Eligibility
Applicants must be:
- currently enrolled in a PhD program or at an equivalent doctoral research stage
- working on a topic related to Southeast Asian Studies
- based in Japan at the time of application, regardless of nationality
- have completed their main fieldwork
- able to fully participate in the two-day workshop in Kyoto
- willing to submit a piece of writing (5,000–8,000 words) in advance of the workshop
Application Materials
Applicants are asked to submit the following:
- A concise, 300-word journal abstract of the applicant’s current research project, written as if for submission to a journal in Southeast Asian Studies. The abstract should generally address the following, though not every element needs equal weight:
- state the central research question or problem
- briefly establish context and scope, situating the project within relevant scholarly debates
- indicate the empirical material or source base, and methodological or analytical approach
- offer key findings or insights, and the broader contribution to the field
- A two-page CV
- Full contact details and current institutional affiliation, including: name, email address, institution, program name, year of enrollment, and supervisor’s name
Selection Process
14 participants will be selected from a pool of applicants. Applications will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- Originality and quality of the research project
- Relevance to Southeast Asian Studies
- Clarity and coherence of the abstract
- Engagement with relevant scholarly debates
- Readiness of the project for advanced discussion in a workshop setting
Requirement for Selected Participants
Selected participants will be required to submit a piece of writing (5,000–8,000 words) in advance of the workshop. This may be an existing dissertation chapter or journal article rather than a newly written piece.
The piece should be in the form of a journal-article-style research paper based on the participant’s dissertation research. It should present a clearly defined research problem, situate the discussion in the relevant literature, develop a central argument, and demonstrate the paper’s broader scholarly contribution to Southeast Asian Studies.
The piece should be conceived as a self-contained, article-length work that could, in revised form, serve as the basis for submission to an academic journal.
Submission Guidance Questions
The following questions are offered to help applicants select which existing piece to submit, or revise it where needed:
- What is the central research question or problem?
- How does the paper engage with and intervene in existing scholarship?
- What materials, fieldwork, or sources does the paper draw on?
- What is the paper’s main argument?
- What does the paper contribute to broader debates in Southeast Asian Studies?
- How does this paper relate to the larger dissertation project?
