At present, the ships that fetch imported bananas from Mindanao to Japan also bring in profitable junk goods from Japan to be sold in the many thrift stores all over the country called “Japan Surplus”. Record turntables, household wares and furniture and other junk which are discarded presumably from households with old deceased members are shipped to the Philippines to be resold as prized thrift finds (often at very prohibitive prices). This economic and cultural exchange both foretell death and decay, from the pesticides that harm the soil to produce Japan’s bananas, to the discarded memoirs and possessions of Japan’s significant senior population. But both also “make do” and speak of endurance and resilience as these products create new types of social and cultural economies that bind the two nations together.
