〇概要
International and intercultural collaborations often attempt to explore
how cultural differences can be either instrumentalised for mutual
learning or transcended to promote humanist and utopian agendas on ‘
cross-cultural understanding’. But how do we manage collaborations where
the ‘common ground’ is elusive, and where there are seemingly
irreconcilable and even mutually-canceling narratives? A prominent
example of this would be the way the Second World War is remembered in
Japan, in contrast to the countries that were once under the rule of the
Empire of Japan. Using the case study of the play ‘Tiger of Malaya’,
Singaporean playwright Alfian Sa’at, together with actors Yuya Tanaka
and Rei Kitagawa, and  dramaturg Shawn Chua will present on some of
their research and challenges in creating a work that acknowledges
multiple ‘truths’ and dissonant histories.

Alfian Sa’at is a Resident Playwright with W!LD RICE. In 2001, he won
the National Arts Council Young Artist Award for Literature. He has been
nominated 10 times for Best Original Script at the Life! Theatre Awards,
winning for Landmarks (2005), Nadirah (2010), Kakak Kau Punya Laki (Your
Sister’s Husband, 2014) and Hotel (with Marcia Vanderstraaten, 2016).
Alfian has also been awarded the Boh-Cameronian Award in Malaysia for
Best Book and Lyrics for The Secret Life of Nora (2011) and for Best
Original Script for Parah (Wounded, 2013). His plays have been performed
in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Melbourne and
Berlin.
