Ink Legacy: The Calligraphy of Tsue Ta Tee, a Pioneering
First-Generation Calligrapher in Malaya/Malaysia from China, and Its
Significance to Penang’s Cultural Heritage(英語通訳なし、質疑中国語可)

Abst: In the turbulent early-to-mid 20th century, a wave of Chinese literati and calligraphers migrated south to Penang, Malaya, escaping geopolitical upheavals and natural disasters. Finding sanctuary there,
they settled down and dedicated themselves to disseminating knowledge. Their enduring contributions to local culture, education, and calligraphic arts now constitute a vital cultural-educational asset and documentary heritage for Penang’s Chinese community. This presentation investigates the calligraphic style and artistic footprints of Tsue Ta Tee (1903–1974), a pioneering first-generation calligrapher in Malaysia and Singapore, specifically focusing on his temporary residence in Penang. By re-evaluating his calligraphic masterpieces left in Penang’s public spaces, this study aims to reconstruct his social circles and stylistic traits during this period, while filling a historical gap to underscoring the profound heritage significance of Tsue Ta Tee and his art to the Malaysian calligraphy scene and documentary legacy.
