The Japan Society for Southeast Asian Studies (JSSEAS or Tōnan Ajia Gakkai in Japanese) was established in November 1966 to promote the study of the history, cultures, languages and societies of Southeast Asia in Japan under the name of JSSAH or Tōnan Ajia Shi Gakkai. The present membership amounts to more than 750 (as of December 2015), including historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, linguists and other social scientists.

This Web site was implemented in December 1997 to promote the exchange of information, facilitate contacts between researchers, and foster the understanding of Southeast Asia in the general public.
