題 目：Buddhism and Trade: Rock Cut Caves of the Western Ghats
概 要：This presentation will investigate the relationship between Buddhism and the development of Indian Ocean trade in Early Historic South Asia. Ports located on the western coast of South Asia provided access to the Indian Ocean and in order to reach these ports from the Deccan interior, the Western Ghats mountain range had to be crossed.
Over fifty rock cut Buddhist monasteries situated within the mountain range date to the Early Historic period and by examining literary, archaeological and epigraphic evidence, this presentation will evaluate the patronage of merchants to these monasteries.

題 目：ボロブドゥールの善財童子歴参図の観音図像について
概 要：ボロブドゥール第2回廊主壁にある『華厳経入法界品』浮彫には、善財
童子の観音菩薩訪問が4面表現されている。経文によれば、善財が観音を訪ねた
のは1度のみで、観音はその時ポータラカ山にいたという。ところが観音が山中
にいるのは1面(II 100)のみであり、他はいずれも宮殿に坐り、二臂像が1面(II
47)、六臂像が1面(II 102)、四臂像が2面(II 100, 102)ある。ポータラカ山中の
観音の先例はインドのパーラ時代にあり、臂数に変化をつけたのは、経文にある
観音の多様な変化身に対応するものと思われる。

「非宗教という宗教―南タイ・プーケットにおける中国系廟にみる制度宗教外の宗教実践―」
【発表要旨】
１ 加藤眞理子氏
本発表では、2000年9月から2002年3月までタイ国東北地方一農村で行った定着調
査に基づき、近代以降、教育やメディアなどを通じて全国に浸透したタイ語の識
字による、女性の仏教実践への影響を検討する。事例として、雨安居期の持戒行
における誦経を取り上げる。出家者として寺院で経典文字を学ぶことができた男
性に対し、女性は近代教育を通じて初めてタイ語の識字能力を獲得した。しかし
近代教育を受けた最初の世代の農村女性にとって、持戒行での誦経がタイ語の識
字能力を利用できる唯一の機会であった。独自の文字を持たない宗教言語として
のパーリ語、地域の日常語としてのラオ（イサーン）語、そして国家語であり文
字を持つタイ語と宗教実践との相互関係をローカルな場から検討する。そのよう
な検討を通じてタイ語とその印刷物の普及が、女性の宗教実践を活性化させ、繰
り返し朗誦することが経の身体化を促したことを明らかにし、識字者である宗教
儀礼専門家を対象とした、これまでの宗教実践研究を再考する。
２ 片岡 樹氏
本報告は、南タイ・プーケットの中国系廟の調査にもとづき、制度宗教の外に
おける宗教実践の重要性を検討するものである。公認宗教制度をとるタイ国にお
いては、分析用語では「宗教」と呼ばれるであろう事象が、しばしば制度の上で
は「非宗教」として行われている。現行のタイ国の公認宗教制度のもとでは、仏
教は国家仏教庁に、その他の宗教は文化省宗教局に登録することになっている。
しかし中国系廟は、一部の大乗仏教寺院を除きそうした「宗教」カテゴリーの外
にある。プーケット県の場合、県内の廟はその一部が世俗団体として内務省の管
轄下（廟あるいは財団として登記）に、その他の大部分が単なる未公認の状態に
ある。しかしまさにそれらが制度上「非宗教」であるがゆえに、むしろ「正しい
××教はかくあるべし」という問いを回避した宗教実践が可能になっている。国家
による「宗教」の制度的囲い込みが、むしろ「非宗教」として放置された領域で
の宗教活動をうながしており、それがかえって聖俗の区分を曖昧にしている。そ
こで実際に見られるのは、僧侶や「仏教」施設を介在させない「拝仏」行為や、
制度宗教間の境界の不明瞭な宗教実践である。「タイ仏教」と公称される制度
は、その外縁においてこうした制度外の「非宗教」の領域に依存している、とい
うのが本報告の提示する知見である。

Singapore Cinemas: The Locations of Film Exhibition

Singapore has been home to a rich and diverse film culture, anchored by unique sites of exhibition showing films in various languages/dialects and formats. This workshop aims to document the history of film exhibition in Singapore by inviting methodologies such as archival research as well as oral history and incorporating disciplines such as film studies, architectural history, geography, and local Singapore history. Each contributor to the workshop is encouraged to focus on a specific place for film going in Singapore, from the silent era to the present, from kampong areas to downtown, ranging from the picture palaces to mobile film units and open-air cinemas.
Issues to be considered can include nostalgia and memory, cinephilia, heritage conservation and urban development, kampong life, class division, language differences, immigrant experiences, censorship, advertising, cinema's relationship with neighboring places of consumption, place of cinema in culture of local community, and youth culture - among other topics. In tracking the histories of certain places for film-going in Singapore, this workshop thus also hopes to contribute to a history of everyday life and culture in Singapore.
This one-day event will be held at the National Library of Singapore, in conjunction with the library's Singapore 101
(SG101) programme, and is organized in collaboration with the Singapore Heritage Society. The conference will support an exhibition of images and artifacts from Singapore's film exhibition heritage to be installed at the National Library.
The following is a list of possible cinemas for discussion, while this list is far from exhaustive and ideas for other locations are more than welcome:
Capitol Theatre, Cathay Cinema, The Alhambra, Garrick, Rex Cinema, King's Theatre, Lido Cinema, The Majestic, Cinemas in Great World/New World, Kreta Ayer People's Theater, Oriental Theatre, open air cinemas, mobile film units, alternative venues for experimental film, film society meeting places.
SUBMISSION DETAILS
Participants should submit a 250-word abstract and a short paragraph of personal self description by 12 February 2010 .
Interested participants are also encouraged to indicate whether they have any material from their research or personal collection that might be available for inclusion in the accompanying exhibition.
The proceedings of the workshop and related documentation and research material will be published in an edited volume.
