A Buddhist Memorial Service for Professor Ishii Yoneo in Bangkok
A group of colleagues, friends, students, and admirers of the late Professor Ishii Yoneo in Thailand, with Dr. Charnvit Kasetsiri and Achan Chalong Soontravanich (Department of History, Chulalongkorn University) as the coordinators, is organizing a Buddhist memorial service for Professor Ishii who passed away on February 12, 2010, in Japan.
This memorial service, in remembrance of Professor Ishii’s contributions to the study of history, society, and culture of Thailand and Southeast Asia during the past five decades, will take place on Friday, March 5, 2010, from 9.30-11.00 am. in Sala Daeng (the Red Pavilion), in front of the Ubosoth (the Ordination Hall), Wat Bowonniwet Viharn in Bangkok. This is the temple where Professor Ishii was ordained as a Buddhist monk for three months in 1958.
The hosts and organizers of Professor Ishii’s memorial service include the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University; the Foundation for the Promotion of Social Sciences and Humanities Textbooks Project; the Asian Scholarship Foundation (of which Professor Ishii was Chairperson and Executive Committee member); and Tonchabab Publishing House, all of which are academic institutions/organizations in Thailand that had worked closely with Professor Ishii.
The memorial service for Professor Ishii at Wat Bowonniwet Viharn will begin at 9.30 am with a brief recollection of Professor Ishii’s life and works, to be followed by 3 short remembrance speeches by guests of honor who were Professor Ishii’s long-time friends and colleagues, namely H.E. Kyoji Komachi, Japanese Ambassador to Thailand; Achan William Klausner, President Emeritus, The James H.W. Thompson Foundation; and Achan Sulak Sivaraksa. A Buddhist religious service will follow at 10.15 am and end at 11.00 am.
All of the late Professor Ishii’s colleagues, friends, students and acquaintances are cordially invited to the memorial service.
